The fact that the synagogue, built in 1727, did not fall victim to the flames on the night of the Reich pogroms in 1938 is only due to the courage of some Reckendorf citizens. Another stroke of luck came in the form of the rediscovered genizah (a place where, according to Jewish custom, ritual objects that are no longer needed are stored) of the former Jewish community in the attic, which was one of the largest in what is now Upper Franconia in the mid-19th century. Exhibited in the former women's gallery, these objects, together with other finds from the war and post-war period, tell the eventful history of the building and the Jewish community in Reckendorf.
