Domschatz- und Diözesanmuseum (Cathedral Treasury and Diocesan Museum)
Twelve centuries of the Eichstätt diocese - that means twelve centuries of history, personalities and art in the diocese. The Domschatz- und Diözesanmuseum (Cathedral Treasury and Diocesan Museum) is dedicated to this theme. The collection focuses on painting and sculpture of the late Middle Ages, textiles and paraments of the Middle Ages and the Baroque, goldsmith's work, religious folk art and archaeological finds. But there are also sections devoted to the organisation of the diocese and the building history of the cathedral. Outstanding testimonies are the "Willibaldsgewänder" (12th century), the "Walburga Carpets" (around 1465 and around 1520), which depict the legend of the popular saint, and the Rationale of Bishop Johann v. Eych (15th century). In addition, there are important early and late Gothic sculptures and paintings, paraments of the Baroque period, 18th and 19th century goldsmith's work from Augsburg, Munich and Eichstätt as well as a unique Venetian finger reliquary (around 1200). At the end of the sequence of rooms is the historic chapter house with frescoes by Johann Michael Franz from 1762.
