A very special kind of gold was produced in the factory's own "alchemist's kitchen": The snuff offered under the trademark "Schmalzler Franzl" was in such demand that Bernard AG was Germany's largest snuff factory before World War 2, employing around 350 people. Visitors should not be surprised by the incomparable smell that greets them in the "document Schnupftabakfabrik" (document snuff factory), because in order to convey an authentic impression, the furnishings have been left in their original state. Three rooms illuminate the art of tobacco production and, with the documentation of the company history of Bernard AG, pass on a piece of industrial culture. The building itself is one of the largest complexes of Regensburg townhouse architecture from the Middle Ages. Its changing use from noble residential and representative building of rich merchants to snuff factory reflects the history of Regensburg.
