The Diözesanmuseum St. Afra (Diocesan Museum) on the north side of Augsburg Cathedral opened its doors in 2000 and invites visitors on a journey through time in the diocese of St. Ulrich. The museum holds an extensive collection of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque Augsburg goldsmith's works from the fields of liturgical utensils and reliquaries, of which the most beautiful works are presented permanently in the exhibition. Special works such as the textiles from the 10th century, the Ottonian bronze portal of the cathedral or the funeral weapons of Emperor Charles V are unique in their form and represent art-historical highlights. An archaeological window in the Ulrich Chapel provides a view of the excavated building fragments of the Carolingian cathedral and the former cathedral monastery complex. The Diözesanmuseum (Diocesan Museum) of St. Afra presents sacred art from 17 centuries and presents special exhibitions on various historical or contemporary themes every year.
