Burg Lauenstein (Lauenstein castle)
The oldest parts of this typical hilltop castle date back to the 12th century. The main wing with its four corner towers was built in 1551/54 and is a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture in Central Germany. From 1896 onwards, the now neglected castle was renovated in the style of late historicism. This peculiar combination of 16th century architecture with elements of historicism and art nouveau is particularly visible in the Orlamünde Hall (entrance hall) and the large knights' parlour in the Thünabau. The castle museum displays furniture, armour and weapons from the 16th and 17th centuries in over 20 rooms, as well as special collections of keys and locks, lamps, musical instruments and from other folkloristic areas.
