Altes Schloss Schleißheim (Old Schleißheim Castle)
Schleißheim Palace was founded by Duke Wilhelm V, who began building an estate as a princely Eremitage (Hermitage) here in 1598 in a lonely moorland area. From 1617, his son Duke Maximilian I had a palace built on its site according to the plans of Heinrich Schön the Elder. Peter Candid, who came from the Netherlands, played a major role in the decorative design of the palace rooms with stucco and frescoes.
During the Second World War, almost the entire roof and several rooms of the palace building were completely destroyed; it was not until 1970 that reconstruction could begin. Today, large parts of the masonry above the cellar vaults, most of which date from the construction period, have been completely renewed, while the western vestibule and the adjoining hall wall, including their decoration, have been preserved in their original state. This also essentially applies to the stucco decoration of the former Wilhelm Chapel.
