Alte Schäferei – Gerätemuseum des Coburger Landes (Old sheepfold - Equipment museum of the Coburg region)
What are Coburg foxes? No, not forest dwellers, but an old breed of sheep that enriches the exciting tool museum as a "living inventory" in summer. With around 36,000 objects, the museum has one of the most important folklore collections in Bavaria. It is housed in the former estate shepherd's house in Ahorn, the last completely preserved ensemble of buildings of this kind and witness to a once important branch of agriculture in the Duchy of Coburg. The main buildings - a large former sheepfold for about 600 animals and the shepherd's dwelling - date from 1713, while the outbuildings - a large double barn, a well house and a small barn - were built in the course of the 19th century. A baking oven and a pigsty from the 18th century complete the ensemble. The permanent exhibition documents agriculture, crafts and folklore of the Coburg region. The museum also houses a supra-regional shepherding archive.
