The Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) in Nuremberg, founded in 1662 as the first art academy in the German-speaking world, sees itself as a creative laboratory with an open research mission. The liberal and applied arts form the central teaching areas.
In the classes for fine arts, sculpture, painting, art education, free graphics and painting/object art, gold and silversmithing and graphic design, professors and students engage in free discourse. The postgraduate courses in architecture and urban research as well as art and public space are among the most renowned in their field. The university seeks to facilitate all forms and expressions of contemporary artistic practice and also to grasp these in their respective social and historical-critical context. The basis of the education is the promotion of the students' individual development. The students are responsible for the conception and realisation of their artistic projects. The aim of the training is the acquisition of individual competence and skills that can be improved in theory and practice.
