Afrikamuseum (Africa Museum)
The secrets of ancient African tribal life are revealed in the Afrikamuseum (Africa Museum). For example, when assessing an African work of art, the question is not "Who is the artist?", but "Which ethnic group made it?". African ancestor sculptures and dance masks are not individual works of art, but an expression of ethnic art. Although there are certain carvers in every village who practise their craft as a profession, their works are essentially replicas of earlier forms. African art styles are tribal and have a static, hieroglyphic character. In addition to ancestor sculptures and dance masks, a large number of short weapons are presented, which were not used for war and defence purposes, but rather as representative symbols of dignity and chieftaincy insignia.
