"Michelangelo 550!" marks the 550th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) and concludes a trilogy of events that the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (Central Institute for Art History) has dedicated to the three founders of the High Renaissance in Italy (previously Leonardo da Vinci 500, 2019, and Raphael 500, 2020). Accompanying a colloquium that presented current research on Michelangelo, this exhibition presents the long engagement with the "divine artist" and his works using the example of selected prints and publications. The differing (post-)fame of Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo and their works not only reflect the changes in art, taste and interests since the 16th century in exemplary fashion. National differences and emphases in the examination of these 'super-figures' of art also become clear.
