The White Castle Heroldsberg invites you to rediscover the extraordinary work of Michael Mathias Prechtl (1926-2003). Prechtl, a pupil of the Heroldsberg painter Fritz Griebel, is one of the most influential and fascinating artists of the 20th century in Franconia. He created a multifaceted oeuvre that was recognised far beyond the borders of Franconia. His works captivate with their unmistakable visual language and subtle humour. Prechtl became particularly well known for his impressive illustrations of literary classics as well as his work for renowned publications such as The New York Times and Der Spiegel.
The exhibition presents a selection of Prechtl's best-known works, including woodcuts, lithographs, etchings, acrylic paintings, posters and book illustrations. Special attention is paid to a significant episode in his career: the conflict over the colouring of Nuremberg City Hall in 1989, which led to a break between Prechtl and the City of Nuremberg.
With this exhibition, Weißes Schloss Heroldsberg provides an insight into the art of Michael Mathias Prechtl, whose unique visual language and critical examination of history, society and politics have lost none of their significance to this day.
