What clothes did the inhabitants of ancient Augsburg wear? Only togas and tunics? Was there even a special dress code? And did the Romans really only wear sandals? The student exhibition project at tim explores these and other fascinating questions.
For two semesters, students worked together with lecturers from the Department of Classical Archaeology at the University of Augsburg, the Augsburg City Archaeological Centre and the tim on the subject of textiles in ancient Raetia. The result is a surprising and fascinating insight into an early world of textile production, fashion trends and dress codes.
Unfortunately, no fabrics have survived from Roman Augsburg - instead, the exhibition shows a total of 73 artefacts from the city area, some of which are now being presented to the public for the first time. These include tools for textile production such as weaving swords and sewing needles, representative tombs showing the clothing of the Roman upper class, as well as several garment brooches, which were a regional speciality in Roman fashion, and many other exciting objects.
