With the exhibition "Displacement", the US artist Krista Svalbonas explores the theme of flight and displacement as it occurred on a massive scale in the wake of the Second World War. At the end of the war that started in National Socialist Germany, almost eleven million so-called Displaced Persons (DP) found themselves in this country. Many refugees had to live in camps, sometimes for several years. Krista Svalbonas has tracked down and photographed a number of these former DP camp buildings all over Germany, including Augsburg. The artist has aesthetically processed the resulting images and covered them with a seemingly abstract structure that emerges as writing on closer inspection. Krista Svalbonas has burnt textual passages out of her photographs with the help of a laser cutter. These were taken from written petitions that had arrived in the USA from the DP camps seeking help. In view of the more recent refugee movements that have occurred worldwide as a result of wars, Krista Svalbonas' work takes on an unexpected topicality.
