JONATHON KEATS · ECOLOGIES OF TIME
02.08.2026 - 18.10.2026 ,
Studienkirche St. Joseph (Exhibition Room Church St Joseph)
The experimental philosopher, artist and author Jonathon Keats is installing a novel clock and calendar at St Josef’s Studienkirche, situated on the banks of the Salzach, which synchronise the flow of time with the flow of the river itself.
Since the Middle Ages, clocks have been found in churches, lending structure and rhythm to communal life. However, the time measured by mechanical or electronic clocks is not universal. Rather, long before the pendulum was discovered, time was determined by the cycles of nature.
Natural time, as reflected in the growth of trees and the flow of rivers, remains significant to this day – perhaps more than ever. A humanity that synchronises with nature might be able to live in harmony and connection with the environment.
