Städtische Galerie im Leeren Beutel (Municipal Gallery in the Empty Bag)
To mark the 100th birthday of Regensburg artist Richard Berger (1923 - 1998), the Städtische Galerie im Leeren Beutel (Municipal Gallery in the Empty Bag) is showing a major retrospective of his works from the 1940s to the 1990s. His estate contains a remarkable oeuvre that covers a wide range of techniques and an equally remarkable stylistic spectrum. Richard Berger already devoted himself to drawing during the Second World War. From 1945, he began his artistic training with Max Wissner (1873 - 1959) and worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist alongside his work in his parents' butcher's shop in Ostengasse. From 1949, he was a member of the BBK Oberpfalz/Niederbayern and regularly took part in its exhibitions. He received his nickname Richard "Ricardo" Berger from Richard Triebe (1922 - 2012), whom he repeatedly portrayed. In the years that followed, he worked with many well-known artists from Regensburg, such as Kurt von Unruh (1894 - 1986), Walter Zacharias (1919 - 2000) and Otto Baumann (1901 - 1992).
The exhibition shows a broad cross-section of Richard Berger's work, which has unfortunately been forgotten since his death a good 25 years ago. Visitors will finally be able to explore the individual groups of themes and motifs that Richard Berger explored over the decades in a wide variety of artistic disciplines in a comprehensive exhibition. In particular, parts of the Regensburg artist's large estate, which is managed by his two sons and consists of woodcuts and linocuts, oil and lacquer paintings, pencil drawings as well as enamel and stone works, will be made accessible to the public for the first time.
