From 29 July, the City Museum will be hosting the special exhibition ‘The Illusionist’ by the Munich-based artist Yana Rishe. The exhibition is dedicated to Goethe’s *Faust II* and transposes key motifs from the classic work into the present day.
Through painting, installation and film, the artist explores themes that seem more relevant today than ever: artificial intelligence, ideals of beauty, power, wealth and human nature. Drawing on characters such as the Homunculus, Helena and Mephistopheles, she creates visual worlds that lie between dream and reality, past and future. Rishe’s work is characterised by an opulent visual language inspired by Baroque elements.
A particular highlight is a kaleidoscope installation that transforms a single coin into seemingly infinite wealth, thereby challenging our notions of value. ‘The Illusionist’ highlights the mechanisms of our modern society and invites us to renegotiate the ‘true value of life’ in a world full of technical and material illusions.
