Ernst Schweninger, who was born in Freystadt and grew up in Neumarkt and had studied medicine in Munich, was the only doctor to successfully treat Imperial Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, even though he was only predicted by others to have a few months to live. For 16 years until his death, Schweninger treated the prominent patient as well as celebrities such as Cosima Wagner, Friedrich Alfred Krupp and the imperial nurse Charlotte von Meiningen. He also opened a sanatorium in Heidelberg, taught as a professor at the Charité in Berlin and ran the first hospital for naturopathy in Berlin Groß-Lichterfelde before settling down with his family in a residential neighbourhood in Munich. The Stadtmuseum Neumarkt (Neumarkt City Museum) traces the life of this charismatic doctor using unique memorabilia that was brought to Neumarkt by Schweninger's children in the 1960s.
