Since 2004, conferences of agricultural scientists have been taking place worldwide under the title "Rhizophere", dedicated to researching the root zone of plants in the soil. The term was coined 100 years ago by Lorenz Hiltner. Born in Neumarkt in 1862, the scientist was appointed head of the newly founded Königlich Bayerische Agrikulturbotanische Anstalt in Munich in 1902 after his studies and a fast-paced career. Lorenz Hiltner published numerous pioneering research rockets, always in an effort to increase agricultural yields for the supply of the population. On the 100th anniversary of his death on 6 June 1923, the City Museum presents the great son of the city in a special exhibition.
