YOUNG HANDS FOR OLD WALLS –
THE YOUTH CONSTRUCTION CAMPS OF THE GERMAN FOUNDATION FOR MONUMENT PRESERVATION

Stadtmuseum Mainburg (Mainburg City Museum)
How can we spark an interest in historic buildings and almost forgotten craft techniques among young people? The answer: Jugendbauhütten!
Thanks to the support of the International Youth Community Services (ijgd) and with the help of a large network of sponsors, many federal states have successfully established a Voluntary Social Year (FSJ) in heritage conservation within the framework of the Jugendbauhütten scheme. For 17 years now, the Regensburg Youth Building Workshop has been committed to nurturing the next generation of heritage conservationists throughout Bavaria—
and thus to the preservation and safeguarding of our cultural monuments.
The concept of the Jugendbauhütten is based on the idea of trusting young people to be capable of achieving things,
giving them the opportunity to try their hand at something and, as part of a community, to tackle a task they might never have dared to attempt on their own. Becoming part of a larger whole gives strength and allows small ideas to take flight. Through the work they carry out on the monument with their own hands, the young people gain a very practical connection to history and come to see the monument as part of their own past – a past to which only they, as the next generation, can give a future.
This exhibition aims to highlight successful restoration projects, promising concepts for the use of heritage sites, strong partnerships and, above all, the commitment of young people to heritage conservation throughout Bavaria.
