Questions worth asking about Erlangen's history
18.05.2025 - 06.01.2026 ,
Stadtmuseum Erlangen (Erlangen City Museum)
There are things - and not in short supply. Over the last 150 years, tens of thousands of objects have found their way into the collection, and the number is constantly growing. In the exhibition, we take a closer look at around 50 of them. Many are on display for the first time, most of them are otherwise stored in the depot. Together, they take us on a journey through over 1000 years of the city's history - from the first mention of Erlangen to the coronavirus pandemic - and add many new aspects and perspectives to the permanent exhibition.
The exhibition shows how two Erlangen students "invented" Franconian Switzerland or why the reputation of Erlangen beer reached as far as the Balkans. Toy figures from the Nazi era illustrate how even children were indoctrinated in the ways of the regime. A parking meter is representative of the change in Erlangen's transport policy, a protest banner from the "climate camp" for current debates on climate protection.
Whether large or small, splendid or inconspicuous. All the "things" on display have one thing in common: they shed light on curious, questionable and interesting facts about Erlangen and show diverse, surprising and often new facets of the city's history.
