A double devil's covenant in a novel from 1947: the artist's pact with the devil to supposedly overcome a crisis in art and the Germans' pact with Hitler. The exhibition shows, rich in documents, how strongly Thomas Mann's own biography, his commitment to democracy, influenced the novel. The political-social dimension is also illuminated as a current topic: the responsibility of the artist and the democratic citizen for the events of his time.
