The painter's studio is closed, the work process of the paintings completed. In the worldly seclusion of his studiolo, Gerhard Richter now creates drawings that must fulfil his self-imposed maxim: "The real thing, the most difficult thing, is to make something that is good." This applies in particular to drawing, as every pentimento, every uncertainty and inconsistency would leave its mark on the paper.
It is time to reflect on the art of drawing - Gerhard Richter's art of drawing - in this free space beyond the exuberant discourse on his oeuvre as a whole. The focus here is on the selection of his most recent graphic works for the Munich exhibition project. The abundance of this virtuoso block of works is surprising in view of his entire oeuvre of drawings. He juxtaposes the serial hanging of his current drawings in ascetic rigour with a newly created strip painting that dominates the exhibition space. At the entrance, only the edition Schädel (Skull), 2017, rests in one of the twelve otherwise empty display cases for graphic art. It is both a provocative and enigmatic harbinger. But the sober appearance is deceptive.
