Tony Cragg is one of the most innovative, versatile and renowned sculptors in international contemporary art. What is less well known is that since the beginning of his artistic activity in the 1970s, he has created an extensive body of drawings in which he "thinks sculpture". The block of drawings, which has grown over decades and often surprises with unusual motifs, provides a profound insight into his sculptural thinking and is a source of inspiration of the first order for him.
With the exhibition "Cragg", the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munich is once again raising the question of the significance of drawing art in the 21st century as a source of inspiration within the visual arts at the beginning of the new year and questioning its role as an existential form of expression of human intellect and its creative power. In the case of Tony Cragg, it succeeds in providing unexpected insights that broaden the understanding of his artistic œuvre through the synopsis of drawing and sculpture. For in no other contemporary sculptor do the two artistic media intermingle to the extent they do in his work.
It is a stroke of luck that the artist has given the curator carte blanche to draw from an almost inexhaustible body of work for the exhibition of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in the Neue Pinakothek (New Pinakothek) and to rethink the sculptural oeuvre across media as well as space and time.
