With its new special exhibition, the Murnau Castle Museum shines a spotlight on a fascinating figure who has largely remained hidden from scholarship until now: the theatre critic and art writer Alfred Mayer (1860–1932), who, as a patron and benefactor, gathered renowned cultural figures around him. The Castle Museum holds three artists’ albums and a photo book from the estate of Mayer and his daughter Eva (1917–2008). The albums entered the museum’s collection in 2015 and 2024 via two different routes, but in both cases as donations from private collections.
