Born in Hamburg, Wolfgang Tornieporth studied painting with Rudolf Hausner and graphic art with Bauhaus students Kurt Krantz and Hans Thiemann at the Lerchenfeld Academy of Fine Arts there from 1970 to 1975. Horst Janssen was one of his role models.
In 1977, he moved to Berlin with his family, where he produced etchings and lithographs in the print workshop of the Künstlerhaus Bethanien. From 1981 to 1987 he published the Berliner Grafik-Kalender as chairman. After that, painting became his main focus. He created flower and landscape paintings.
In the early 2010s, he produced a series of mountain paintings. However, Tornieporth never aimed for an authentic reproduction, but saw the landscape as a metaphor for moods and states of mind. Since 1997, Uffing am Staffelsee had become the centre of his life.
