Man-eating Cyclopes and sirens with irresistible songs - in the mythological sagas, the ancient hero Odysseus encounters all kinds of magical creatures. Through cunning tricks, as the author Homer tells it, he is able to evade the magic and the dangers of the supernatural beings, even if the Olympian gods are not always of any help to him.
Gustl G. Kirchner from Schweinfurt approaches these exciting stories in several cycles of works. His complex exploration of the motif in multi-coloured woodcuts uses different colour combinations to set the ancient verses in new exciting moods, which can now be discovered at Schloss Johannisburg (Johannisburg Castle). In the castle museum, the prints will be on display in the context of contemporaneous Aschaffenburg artists.
