The province of Raetia Secunda, whose borders through the Danube and Iller also marked the outer borders of the Western Roman Empire, remained inhabited after its fall in the 5th century.
The region became part of the Ostrogothic Empire under Theodoric around 488 and was transferred to the Frankish Empire after 536, which then formed the basis for the Bavarian duchy with the province of Noricum.
