An essential part of self-definition takes place through our human relationships, our existence in the community, in the systems of relationships that we form with others. Defining our own boundaries and reflecting on them is an important step in balancing our social ties: Their absence often leads to misunderstandings or miscommunication, which can be a breeding ground for conflict.
Mátyás Fusz has been working for years on formal experiments with the space surrounding the human body. In his most recent solo exhibition, he visualises the boundary of vision as a new, protective human organ - a shield - which he also identifies with the boundary of personal space, his projection.
The exhibition, which brings together a variety of materials, tells a story that borrows heavily from Homer's Iliad in a comic-like manner with works that also function as illustrations in some places. One of the most fundamental reference points of our shared cultural memory is presented through the filter of Fus' own experiences and stories, highlighting scenes and characters from the epic that can serve as examples of how conflicts arise, but also how they are resolved and overcome, even thousands of years later.
Fusz emphasises the power relations and socio-psychological relationships between the characters by using the aforementioned formal solution, the horizon. The collar-like motif brings to life unusual, grotesque figures that, even as they stare motionless, evoke a moving story with moments familiar to everyone.
Mátyás Fusz (1986, Szekszárd) graduated in painting from the University of Pécs and received his DLA degree from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. His work consists mainly of sculptures, objects and installations, with which he has explored the subjective and objective limits of perception in recent years.
