“Bubbles are the answer to everything.” Jiří Dokoupil
Jiří Dokoupil has created a unique installation for the Rococo ballroom in Augsburg’s Schaezlerpalais: a large-scale work in which painting and sculpture complement one another and interact with the space. This interaction takes place primarily through the medium of light: the brightly coloured glass bubbles, resting on metal frames, absorb daylight, concentrate it, transform it and reflect it back into the room.
In between stand ‘paravents’ – wall screens folded in three sections – adorned with Dokoupil’s characteristic bubble paintings, which possess great spatial depth. A luminous microcosm that aptly echoes the 18th-century cosmic conceptual framework underlying the ballroom and creates new perspectives for the viewer.
The exhibition on the second floor presents further ‘bubbles’ by Dokoupil. Since the 1970s, the artist – who is counted amongst the ‘New Wild Ones’ of the 1980s – has developed and perfected a technique for this: he mixes soap and pigments to blow soap bubbles onto a painted canvas. He controls their explosion in such a way that intricate organic imprints are created.
