Marie-Antoinette danced her shoes off at a ball in the Schaezlerpalais ... so the legend goes. The fact is, however, that she visited the palace on the way to her wedding - while still an Austrian princess, Maria Antonia - and inaugurated the rococo hall there as part of a grand ball.
This hall is undoubtedly the showpiece of the building, which was constructed between 1765 and 1770 for an Augsburg banker according to designs by the Munich court architect Carl Albert v. Lespilliez, a pupil of François Cuvilliés. It is one of the largest secular rococo ballrooms north of the Alps. Top-class artists of the time were involved in its decoration, including Gregorio Guglielmi (ceiling fresco), Placidus Verhelst (carvings), Franz Xaver Feichtmayr II and Simpert Feichtmayr (stuccowork). Another special feature is that the surface of the banqueting hall is still 90% in its original condition.
