Farm and luxury villa
Roman agriculture between the Inn and the Salzach

Römermuseum Bedaium (Bedaium Roman Museum)
This year, the Seebruck Roman Museum is focusing on agriculture in the area around the small Roman town of BEDAIUM in north-western Noricum. In collaboration with the district heritage officer, Dr Christian Soika, a comprehensive map has been produced showing the Roman estates and settlements between Rosenheim and Salzburg, as well as Mühldorf and the Alps. This up-to-date collection of maps offers a detailed overview of settlement during the Roman period. The exhibition focuses on the luxurious and prestigious villas of the upper classes, as well as the small farmsteads of former veterans of the Roman army. This fascinating topic is presented in an engaging way for visitors of all ages, featuring specially created reconstructions and informative, concise texts. The main attraction of the exhibition is, of course, once again the life-size diorama featuring historical figures depicting scenes from rural life in the province.
It begins with a cavalry veteran dressed in a tunic and cloak with a military belt, complete with his full military equipment and armament. He has received his discharge papers after 25 years of service as a Roman auxiliary soldier and will soon buy a plot of land and build a farm for himself and his family. The luxury villa section is represented by a magistrate in a toga and his wife, who may have lived on one of the feudal estates in Tacherting-Lohen, Erlstätt or Tittmoning. The elaborately crafted mosaic hints at the upmarket lifestyle, featuring underfloor heating and mosaic floors. The ploughman and the farmer harvesting with sickle and scythe provide a glimpse into working life on ancient farms, and grain cultivation in particular. A beekeeper can be seen at the beehive, extracting the coveted and expensive honey from the combs. A young hunter and fisherman, dressed in the attire of a Roman hunter, is about to go hunting with bow and arrow. Finally, a market stall has been set up with Roman foodstuffs, where a market vendor is offering the produce of the surrounding farms for sale.
On the upper floor of the museum, several display cases contain over 30 original finds from Roman villas, which have been loaned by various lenders for this exhibition.
Elaborate models of Roman villas help to visualise the architecture of the time.
Thematically appropriate interactive stations for young and old alike invite visitors to get involved. The 2026 special exhibition is being held in collaboration with the lenders: the Grabenstätt Roman Museum, the Rupertiwinkl Tittmoning Local History Museum and the Tacherting Local History and Heritage Society. A visit to the special exhibition at the BEDAIUM Roman Museum is well worth it as a regional complement to the major exhibition at the Lokschuppen Rosenheim, ‘Romans – Faces of an Empire’. A packed programme of events, including museum tours, workshops, adventure afternoons and family Sundays with the museum’s resident legion, LEGIO IX HISPANA, rounds off the annual programme. There is much to discover at the Seebruck Roman Museum. VIVAT BEDAIUM!
