The spatial acceleration of communication only developed in ancient times with the development of seafaring around 7000 B.C. However, it was a long way before long-distance trade flourished: the oar was only invented in Egypt four thousand years later! What we know about the history of human navigation of the seas is primarily based on wreck finds and images of ships from around 5,000 B.C. Models help to reconstruct such sources experimentally in 3D. The exhibition shows a broad spectrum of boats with different functions from various cultures in the Mediterranean world from the 3rd century BC to late antiquity. It can be viewed in the museum's collection of antiquities, which is open Tues-Sat mornings from 10-13:30 and every second Sunday (https://www.martinvonwagner-museum.com/kalender). Admission is free!
