The new permanent exhibition "MISSION: KERAMIK" on technical ceramics at Porzellanikon Selb (State Museum for Porcelain Selb) has been open to all visitors since 29 October 2024.
"MISSION: KERAMIK" is Porzellanikon's science centre: experience scientific content with emotions, participation, digital elements, games and lots of fun - in a comic-style adventure exhibition. As a visitor, you are involved in an exciting story, the course of which you can determine yourself: Become part of a mission where you can experience and try out lots of new things along the way. The exhibition is designed to be explored on your own. A guided tour is not necessary.
At the beginning, you find yourself in the midst of chaos: water is running out of the taps, appliances are no longer working, cars are parked in the middle of the crossroads. Behind this is the mysterious disappearance of Technical Ceramics from the earth. The effects can be seen in all areas of everyday life. In search of the missing ceramics, you join our heroines Lucy and her aunt Karolin, a scientist, on a comic adventure that takes you into space. The goal: to bring the pottery back to earth.
At eight stations, you will face technical challenges that can be solved with the right use of technical ceramics. These technical ceramics are embodied by eight comic figures, the "Ceramicons", each symbolising a special property of the technical ceramics. The Ceramicons help you, Lucy and Karolin, to complete the adventures and solve the puzzles. The cartoon characters come to life in an animated film, which can be seen in the newly built cinema. Once you have literally stepped through the cinema screen, the adventure begins.
Grab a hero booklet and scan the QR codes - don't forget your smartphone! Now you can test the various high-tech applications yourself, from brake discs and ski jump surfaces to bulletproof and transparent ceramics and heat shields for spaceships such as the space shuttle. Technical ceramics have become indispensable everywhere.
In the next room, you suddenly find yourself in a normal flat. Take one of the tablets provided and discover which everyday objects contain technical ceramics. From the bathroom to the kitchen and the bedroom to the cellar - you are surrounded by technical ceramics everywhere: be it the seal in the tap, the coatings on pans and tools, the sensors in smartphones or the grinder in a pepper mill.
Become part of the science fiction story that begins with turmoil and ends with saving the world. Technical experiments, hands-on stations and a search game with augmented reality take you into a high-tech world that is surprisingly commonplace.
