Home, hemma, בַּיִת, rumah, nyumbani, بيت – almost every language has its own word for ‘home’, and in each and every one of us it evokes very personal images and feelings. However varied our lived experiences may be, the subject touches on something profoundly human. For home is far more than just one’s own room or flat: it is a fabric of space, stability and belonging – the certainty of being seen in all facets of one’s identity. Home is therefore not merely a place where we find ourselves, but something that must be actively built, asserted and constantly reassembled.
In the face of global crises, places where we can feel safe and secure are becoming rarer and, at the same time, more important. In this exhibition, seven female artists explore precisely this question: how can we rethink home – as an emotional, social and spatial concept? Their works open up spaces for the imagination and spark a dialogue about possible futures for living and co-existence.
