The exhibition ‘Marching on – Queer Protests Photographed by Horst Middelhoff’ presents a photographic retrospective of gay and queer protest movements at the turn of the millennium in Munich, Berlin and the USA. The photographs come from the estate of the photographer and journalist Horst Middelhoff, who died in 2025 and was passionately committed to Munich’s gay scene, documenting it with his camera throughout his life. From colourful Pride parades to ACT UP demonstrations during the AIDS crisis, the photos vividly reflect the diversity of the LGBTIQ* community as well as its political and social evolution over time. At the same time, they offer a personal perspective from Horst Middelhoff on the people who have significantly shaped Munich’s queer scene and continue to bring it to life today.
The exhibition invites visitors to look back together on the achievements of the LGBTIQ* community, to engage in conversation with one another, and to stand in solidarity for queer rights. It is intended as a contribution to strengthening queer visibility and opens up a space for dialogue that honours the commitment of past activists whilst also focusing on the present and future perspectives of the queer community.
