Raymond Pettibon & John Newsom
The Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Heavenly Virtues

Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus (Upper Palatinate House of Artists)
Raymond Pettibon and John Newsom met seven years ago at a brunch organised by Stella Schnabel for artists and their children. The two artists' sons also attended this brunch. Pettibon's son Bo and Newsom's son Luke were five and six years old at the time. The two boys met and quickly became friends. This was the beginning of a lasting friendship between the boys and an ever-evolving artistic dialogue between Pettibon and Newsom.
The exhibition at the KEBBEL VILLA is the second joint show of the two artists and their first institutional exhibition in Europe.
Following on from their most recent exhibition "Raymond Pettibon/John Newsom: Classical Elements", which was shown at the COUNTY Gallery in Palm Beach (Florida, USA) in 2022, the artists have chosen another timeless theme to work on and realise. Pettibon and Newsom share a particular fondness for universal iconography with spiritual or psychological references, from the classical elements to the seven deadly sins and the seven heavenly virtues. This allows them to explore the heights and depths of the allegorical and metaphorical possibilities of their individual practices and processes.
