Alexandra Grant: One star is enough to believe in the light

The American artist Alexandra Grant (b. 1973) translates literary texts into images. To this end, she works on large sheets of paper using coloured lettering that is intended to be both read and viewed. Grant sees herself as a mediator of women’s voices, which she amplifies in order to ensure they are heard. For her project at the Neues Museum, she has embarked on a journey of discovery into Nuremberg’s past and present. Four of the eight female authors she has focused on come from or live in the city, which is currently reflecting on its history as a city of literature.

The exhibition examines, by way of example, the role of women in the past and present of German literature. The themes explored include women’s self-discovery through writing throughout history (in conflict with cultural and social expectations), migration to and from Germany, and within Germany itself. Spiritual experience and expertise, depression and hope, war, poverty and access to resources, as well as humanism and discrimination, also form part of the spectrum. The female authors raise their voices, to which Alexandra Grant creates an artistic echo. Through typography and composition, which the artist develops specifically for each text, she explores female language and female horizons of experience.
