It is called a citizens' initiative and was originally one: The Museum Initiative (MI) bears its history in its name. And with pride, because without the commitment of Nuremberg's citizens, the Neues Museum would probably never have existed. The Association of Friends and Sponsors of the Neues Museum continues to support the work of the museum on Klarissenplatz to this day.
The association sees collecting art as its most important task. Since its foundation in 1987, around 200 works have been acquired. The 25th anniversary of the Neues Museum is the occasion for an exhibition in the façade rooms, which highlights the collecting activities of the MI using selected examples.
