For some, the European Union means hope for a united, democratic Europe without nationalistic blinkers. For others, it is merely a bureaucratic monster that devours money and interferes in people's everyday lives with supposedly absurd regulations. What is decided in Brussels has far-reaching consequences in all political fields for no less than around 450 million people. Nevertheless, the European Parliament, the European Council and the other EU institutions remain distant and abstract bodies for most citizens.
Against this backdrop, the young photographer Jan A. Staiger, who has been living in Brussels since 2022, explores the question of how the EU becomes visible - in the form of its representatives, its architecture, its iconography, its merchandising.
