The videos and installations of the Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist (born 1962) carry the viewer off to a sensual, colourful world, playfully exploring the female body and questioning prevailing notions of sexuality, gender and identity. Using close-ups of body parts, unusual camera angles and digital postprocessing, she makes familiar subject matter appear strange.
The Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (born 1929) had to struggle hard to gain such artistic freedoms. Polka dots became the leitmotiv in her work – large and small spots with which she covers humans, animals and their surroundings. They are a metaphor for a breaking down of personal borders and the idea of becoming one with the universe.
In the show at Neues Museum, these two worlds meet in installations, videos, paintings and photographs, opening up new ways of looking at two artists from different generations and backgrounds.
