Women in Art by Adidal Abou-Chamat, Hannah J. Kohler and Judith Samen

Neue Galerie Dachau (New Gallery Dachau)
Even in the 21st century, more than 100 years after the start of the women's movement and a long road to emancipation, female artists are still examining the role of women and how they are perceived in society. Three women from different generations examine traditional role models in photographic and video works. Their critical but also ironic view reveals the gap that still exists between other people's expectations and their own ideas.
Hannah J. Kohler's works reinterpret well-known works of art history and categorise the role of women in today's society. Judith Samen also draws on art historical models. In her unusual self-portraits, she ignores common ideals of beauty and emphasises bodily experiences and her experience of motherhood. As a crossover artist between the European and Arab cultural areas, Adidal Abou-Chamat thematises the search for female identity. She examines cultural differences and peculiarities as well as gender-specific role assignments, clichés and prejudices of Western cultures.
