Petrified weather
21.04.2024 - 30.09.2024 ,
Naturkundemuseum Ostbayern (Natural History Museum East Bavaria)
Almost every weather element leaves fossilised traces. Lightning can strike the sandy soil and fuse the grains of sand together. The resulting lightning tube still tells us about the thunderstorm event centuries later. Heavy rain leaves impact marks in the ground. Under certain conditions, the rain marks are preserved for millions of years. As in a criminal case, the special exhibition at the Geoskop prehistoric world museum (Thallichtenberg) uncovers such fossilised traces. Ten weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, rain and frost are highlighted and each is juxtaposed with corresponding fossilised evidence.
Embark on an unusual journey through the world of the weather of yesterday, today and tomorrow. You can expect informative, bilingual texts (German, English) and extraordinary exhibits. Interactive exhibition elements such as a plasma module and hands-on lightning tubes allow you to experience various weather phenomena.
