The exhibition is dedicated to the rediscovery of the expressionist sculptor Georg Grasegger (1873-1927). He epitomises an entire generation of forgotten artistic-academic sculptors who shaped public space with their sculptural elements and adapted it to their time.

Grasegger's oeuvre ranges from monuments and fountains, architectural works for churches and cultural institutions to remarkable portraits, small sculptures and medals. With sculptures, models and photographs of works from his estate, this retrospective provides the first comprehensive picture of the life and work of a stonemason, carver, artist and designer who no longer exists today.

The importance of the artistic-academic sculptors in the 19th and 20th centuries was expressed in the ubiquitous figures, pictures or friezes on buildings, monuments and sculptures. Numerous artists studied in Bavaria at the "Schools for Wood and Design" in Garmisch-Partenkirchen or the "State School for Wood Sculptors" in Oberammergau.

An outstanding and at the same time typical example among them is the expressionist sculptor Georg Grasegger, whose work is presented in all its facets for the first time in the exhibition with over 100 exhibits. A video projection across all three floors of the museum gives an impression of the breadth of his work. Particularly noteworthy is a series of his monumental study heads as well as a highly unusual, spontaneously carved expressive group of works, his so-called "Stegreifholzereien" and his Bavarian themes, wild dancing couples and no less wildly brawling lads.
