Circus - The changing world of sensations and the Schwabmünchner Großcircus Adolf Fischer. Let yourself be fascinated by the origins, development and influences up to the emergence of the classical circus. The exhibition takes you on a journey through circus history right up to the present day.
The history of the circus is about ingenuity and entrepreneurship, about courageous loners and family dynasties, about daring artists and sensational programmes. Did you know that the circus began in England in the middle of the 18th century and that circuses used to take place in permanent buildings, sometimes with elaborate technology, before the circus tent became a landmark?
Immerse yourself in the chapeau. There is much to marvel at, many a curious idea and circus arts that brought many a dream to life and mesmerised the audience. You can marvel at the glittering costumes of performers, a singing saw, giant clown shoes and strange props, and you will also stand in front of an elephant! With a little skill, you can also try out mutoscopes, which are old flip-book devices, and stereoscopes, which allow 3D viewing.
The world of circus arts is presented through the ages and with a regional focus of its own, namely the Großcircus Adolf Fischer. Circus A. Fischer had its headquarters and winter quarters in Schwabmünchen and was one of the most renowned and largest circus companies of its time in Germany.
