The internationally renowned painter, graphic artist and object artist Moritz Götze (born in Halle/Saale in 1964) is considered a contemporary representative of (East) German Pop. He was last honoured with the Art Prize of the City of Halle/Saale in 2024. Influenced by medieval book illumination, comic art and American pop art, his works are always full of allusions: He picks up on art and cultural-historical models, adds contemporary, partly personal, partly socio-political motifs to them and thus creates new, profound levels of meaning. His colourful figurative enamel paintings, which he sometimes expands into monumental two-dimensional sculptures, are particularly well-known.
For his first exhibition in Nuremberg, Moritz Götze was directly inspired by episodes from the ancient mythological love story of Cupid and Psyche on pieces of crockery from the famous Tucher dinner service: The pictorial scenes of this magnificent Renaissance service on display in the museum were painted and fired in enamel in Limoges, France. Moritz Götze will interpret the scenes of the Tucher service in a contemporary way and bring them to life as enamelled sculptures in the garden of the Tucherschloss Museum.
