To mark the 90th birthday of Heimrad Prem (1934 - 1978), a member of the SPUR group, the SPUR Cham Museum is showing works by the Roding-born artist.
In the town's former "poorhouse", the museum, which is jointly run by the town of Cham and the district of Cham, has been presenting paintings, sculptures and works on paper by the SPUR group since 1991. The charming late Gothic building is located in front of the Biertor (beer gate) on the River Regen.
The founding members of SPUR, which came together in Munich in 1957 and existed until 1965, included Lothar Fischer (1933-2004), Heimrad Prem (1934-1978) and Helmut Sturm (1932-2008), both born in the district of Cham, in Roding and Furth im Wald, and Hans-Peter Zimmer (1936-1992).
Heimrad Prem studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1952 to 1956. He then went on to study painting at the Berlin University of the Arts under Ernst Schumacher. After his return to Munich, he founded the SPUR group together with Lothar Fischer, Helmut Sturm and HP Zimmer, which made a significant contribution to art in West Germany after 1945. In 1964 he took part in the documenta in Kassel.
The exhibition shows works by Prem from various phases of his oeuvre from 1957 to 1977.
