In the SPUR Museum, the former poorhouse of the town of Cham, there are changing exhibitions on local history in two rooms on the ground floor. The theme of the current exhibition is the beginning of industrialisation in Cham over 150 years ago. With the help of historical photos and illustrations, town archivist Timo Bullemer reminds visitors of this important topic in the town's history. The abundance of timber in the Bavarian Forest made Cham an important trading centre in the second half of the 19th century. What began with trade later led to the first wave of industrialisation. The processing of wood as a raw material characterised the economic life of the town for decades. The connection to the railway network in 1861 gave the town a decisive advantage for several years. Large quantities of timber could now be transported over long distances with the help of the rainwater and the railway. This advantage of Cham's location was utilised above all by foreign entrepreneurs.
The exhibition is supplemented with three banners on a further topic, which deals with the well-known architect Joseph Koch (1873-1934) and his buildings and construction projects in Cham. Koch was born in Munich in 1873 and lived for many years in Regensburg, where he died 90 years ago in 1934. He designed prestigious buildings for renowned clients in Regensburg and the Upper Palatinate. In Cham, these included the Rhaner Bräustüberl in Ludwigstraße and the home of the furniture manufacturer Schoyerer.
