The exhibition centres on recent paintings on canvas from Katharina Schellenberger's "Inner Life" series. Faces and fantastic hybrid creatures are integrated into a multi-layered cosmos of colours and abstract forms. The pictures appear ambivalent, sometimes fairytale-like and poetic, sometimes threatening like a nightmare. The motifs of the large-format canvases enter into a dialogue with works on paper, objects and a video work.
Katharina Schellenberger does not give her paintings titles, allowing the viewer's associations free rein - a freedom that she also retains when painting and designing.
Her compositions are created in the painting process. Abstract forms and figures overlap like images in a dream. The artist develops her motifs from an initially non-representational approach to painting. They emerge from the hidden, unconsciously inspired by their surroundings, in constant exchange with the painting.
The artist has been collecting historical porcelain dolls and heads for a long time and has been transforming them into objects since 2021. Motifs from the paintings, such as the doll-like faces or the toy-like creatures, are reflected in the sculptural collages. These assemblages represent small art chamber pieces that touch with their humour and fragility.
The exhibition is located in the Kunstforum Oberschönenfeld, which is situated on the same grounds as the Museum Oberschönenfeld (Museum Oberschönenfeld).
