Too good to be true! Kitsch & Pop from the Klewan Collection
18.07.2026 - 18.10.2026 ,
Museum Moderner Kunst Wörlen Passau (Museum of Modern Art Wörlen Passau)
Curated by Dr Marion Bornscheuer, the exhibition at the MMK Passau uses almost 200 exhibits from the renowned Klewan Collection to re-examine one of the most fundamental questions in art: why do certain images move us, and why is this very effect so often dismissed?
Kitsch is ubiquitous, yet hardly clearly defined. A tension arises between emotion and judgement, between affinity and rejection, which the exhibition deliberately brings to light. At the same time, the show follows the logic of the Klewan Collection, which has for years engaged with visual worlds situated between everyday life, repetition and popular culture.
The focus is on works from the 19th century: idyllic landscapes, religious motifs, moral narratives and much more. These are images that were not created for museums, but for living rooms and public spaces. They were intended to have an immediate impact and, to this end, employed an accessible, emotional visual language.
