Museum Mineralogia Munich. Crystals in nature and technology
Stones enclose a variety of colours. These are characteristic colours at specific locations, depending on the geological formation process or influenced by manual, industrial or virtual interventions. We can track down these locations through guided or intuitive searches. Polarisation microscopy, with its diverse virtual display options, shows the characteristic colouration of the minerals and constituents of the stone involved in the geological formation process. The resulting images are presented in various media in the Museum Mineralogia.
Microscopic observation of thinly polished marble reveals its crystalline structure. Fascinating images are revealed which, in addition to a great variety of shapes and colours, have high aesthetic and compositional qualities.
Polarised light makes the different orientations of the mineral structures visible. Microscopic examination of a single slide reveals a microcosm of colour facets and internal structures.
The project is sponsored by the Erwin and Gisela Steiner Foundation in Munich.
